CTO Programs: Wharton vs MIT vs Berkeley (2026)

By the CTO Coach TeamReviewed against primary sourcesPublished

The main university CTO programs are the Wharton Chief Technology Officer Program, the MIT Professional Education Chief Technology Officer program, the UC Berkeley Executive Education Chief Technology Officer Program, the Cambridge Judge Business School Chief Technology Officer Programme and the Imperial College Business School Emerging Chief Technology Officer programme. All five are blended or online and run for 8 to 12 months, and four of the five expect at least 8 to 10 years of experience (Berkeley lists no formal prerequisites). Published fees range from £8,000 (Imperial) to US$29,000 (Berkeley); MIT does not show a price on the page we opened.

CTO Coach has no commercial relationship with any programme listed here. We use no affiliate links, and every figure below links to the official page we opened in October 2026. Where a page does not show a fee, we say "See provider site" instead of repeating a number from a third-party review.

Dates listed on the same pages: Berkeley "Mar 10, 2027 - Mar 8, 2028"; Cambridge 8 Dec 2026 to 22 Jul 2027; Imperial 17 Dec 2026 to 1 July 2027. We did not find a current CTO-specific programme on official pages for Columbia, Kellogg, INSEAD or London Business School, so they are not listed. Stanford GSB's LEAD Online Business Program (US $19,200, year-long, online) is a general business certificate rather than a CTO programme, so we mention it only for comparison.

Wharton Chief Technology Officer Program

The Wharton program targets current and aspiring CTOs, VPs of engineering, software architects and senior technology executives. It combines 18 weeks of core modules (technology strategy, technology trends, and mastering innovation) with three six-week electives chosen from eight options, live sessions on generative and agentic AI, a capstone project and an optional two-day event on the Philadelphia campus (Wharton).

Who it fits: senior leaders with 10 or more years of experience who want a business-school credential and a mostly online format.

Honest limits: Wharton's two program pages disagree on length (9 months versus 9 to 12 months), and the fee appears on only one of them, so ask admissions for the current figure in writing. The on-campus event is optional and carries a separate US$250 registration fee on Wharton's online programs page, plus travel.

MIT Professional Education Chief Technology Officer program

MIT's blended certificate runs 12 months at 8 to 10 hours a week. The curriculum covers innovative leadership, management of technology (roadmapping, strategy and portfolio analysis), applied AI and agentic AI for transformation, and a team-based impact project that ends with a presentation on campus. It includes two residential weeks on the MIT campus (MIT Professional Education).

Who it fits: leaders of technology departments or projects, and current or aspiring C-suite executives, with at least 10 years of experience and 3 years managing technology innovation or business development projects.

Honest limits: the price and application fee fields on the page are blank, so we cannot give you a number. Two residential weeks is a larger time and travel commitment than the other options in the table. Accommodation, travel and visa costs are excluded.

UC Berkeley Executive Education Chief Technology Officer Program

The Berkeley program lasts 12 months and combines live virtual sessions, about 15 weeks of asynchronous learning and a three-day immersion at UC Berkeley Haas. It has three core modules with guest speakers, short courses on data strategy and AI, and a capstone in which you build a technology strategy roadmap for your own organisation with group coaching. The credential is a Certificate of Excellence in Technology Strategy, a digital certificate with no degree credits (UC Berkeley Executive Education).

Who it fits: senior technology leaders and professionals moving into enterprise-level roles. It lists no formal prerequisites.

Honest limits: the published fee is $29,000, and the certificate carries no degree credits.

Cambridge Judge Business School Chief Technology Officer Programme

Cambridge's programme is blended and ends with a 2.5-day in-person immersion in Cambridge. Core modules cover strategic leadership for CTOs, leadership, culture and innovation, innovation architecture and execution, global ecosystems and strategic partnerships, and enacting innovation, with a business analytics component and one online elective. The assessment is an action plan addressing a real technology issue in your organisation (Cambridge Judge Business School).

Who it fits: aspiring and current CTOs and technology professionals in decision-making roles who want an enterprise-wide leadership position, with more than 10 years of management experience.

Honest limits: the page says applications go through its delivery partner, Emeritus, and non-UK or Irish passport holders may need visa permission, which can take at least six weeks.

Imperial College Business School Emerging Chief Technology Officer

Imperial's programme is the shortest in this list and has the lowest published fee, at £8,000 for eight months, taught online. It has four phases: 12 weeks of executive leadership essentials, then 6 weeks each on technology strategy, CTO transformation imperatives and AI for business transformation. Assessment is pass or no-pass, and it is non-credit-bearing (Imperial College Business School).

Who it fits: senior technical leaders aiming for a C-level role, IT operations and security leaders wanting a bigger strategic role, and digital transformation managers, with at least 8 years of experience.

Honest limits: fully online, so there is no campus immersion; the page gives no weekly time estimate.

Is a CTO program worth it?

A CTO program is worth it when your gap is business, strategy or credibility and your employer or budget can carry the cost. It is much less likely to be worth it if your gap is in a specific skill, a live problem in your current role or a decision about whether you want the job at all. No programme can guarantee a CTO role, a salary increase or a promotion timeline, and none of the pages above claim to.

Before you pay five figures, take the CTO Readiness Assessment (about fifteen minutes) to see where you actually score low across the five dimensions. A twelve-month programme that spends equal time on every dimension is inefficient if your real gap is one of them. For the career context, see how to become a CTO and VP Engineering to CTO.

Main riskBroad curriculum; fee and travelTime and cost; less CTO-specificQuality depends on the coach

Many leaders combine formats: a programme for breadth, and coaching for real-time support once they are in the seat. For coaching providers by type, see the CTO and technical leadership coaching directory. For lower-cost options aimed at engineering managers, see engineering manager courses, and for the coaching, training and mentoring distinction see technical leadership training.

How to judge a CTO program

Whatever programme you consider, test it against these criteria.

It covers the whole CTO role, not one slice. The role spans five dimensions, which we describe in the CTO skills framework:

  • Technical leadership: decision frameworks for architecture, build versus buy and technical debt, not a specific technology stack.
  • People and organisational leadership: senior hiring, organisation design, performance management, managing up to a CEO and board.
  • Business acumen: reading a P&L, unit economics, fundraising conversations, and framing technology investments as business outcomes.
  • Product and innovation: aligning the technology roadmap with product strategy and building platforms that enable experimentation.
  • Operational excellence: reliability, security, compliance and incident management at a strategic level.

The format fits how you learn. Self-paced material is flexible and cheaper but offers no peers or accountability. Cohort programmes add peer learning and momentum. One-to-one coaching is personal but costs more and depends on the coach. University programmes bring credibility and alumni networks, but check who teaches, how recently the curriculum changed and whether alumni actually work as CTOs.

Green flags: practitioner instructors who have held CTO or VP Engineering roles; a structured peer component; a curriculum described in specific detail; a clearly stated audience by career stage and company stage; regular content updates; practical application through cases or projects; transparent outcomes and access to alumni; and an alumni network.

Red flags:

  • Guaranteed outcomes of any kind.
  • Celebrity instructors who have never held a CTO or equivalent role.
  • All theory with no application.
  • No peer component.
  • An outdated curriculum.
  • A one-size-fits-all pitch.
  • A sales page that is all testimonials and no specific topics.

Price versus value. The correlation between price and value is weaker than you might expect. Count your time as part of the cost: a programme with 8 to 10 hours of effort a week for a year is hundreds of hours. If budget is a constraint, start with our free CTO resources.

Frequently asked questions

Which executive program prepares tech leaders to become a CTO?

University programmes built for the purpose include the Wharton Chief Technology Officer Program, MIT Professional Education's Chief Technology Officer certificate, UC Berkeley Executive Education's Chief Technology Officer Program, the Cambridge Judge Business School Chief Technology Officer Programme and Imperial College Business School's Emerging Chief Technology Officer programme. Four of the five expect 8 to 10 or more years of experience. Match the curriculum to your gaps rather than the brand.

How much does a CTO program cost?

On the official pages we opened in October 2026: Berkeley $29,000, Cambridge £23,000, Wharton US$23,000 (on one of its two program pages), Imperial £8,000, and no price shown for MIT Professional Education. Fees exclude travel and accommodation where the pages say so, and change each cohort.

How do the Wharton, MIT and Berkeley CTO programs compare?

Wharton is mostly online with an optional two-day campus event and lists 9 to 12 months. MIT runs 12 months with two residential weeks on campus and 8 to 10 hours of effort per week. Berkeley runs 12 months with a three-day campus immersion and a $29,000 fee. Wharton and MIT expect at least 10 years of experience; Berkeley lists no formal prerequisites.

Is the MIT CTO program better than a part-time MBA?

They do different jobs. The MIT program is a 12-month non-degree certificate focused on technology management and applied AI. A part-time MBA is a degree with a broader general-management curriculum. If you need the degree, choose the MBA; if you need CTO-specific strategy and a shorter commitment, a CTO program fits better. We did not research MBA prices for this guide.

Do I need a CTO program to become a CTO?

No. None of the programs above promise a CTO role, and many CTOs never take one. A program helps most when your gap is business strategy or credibility. If your gap is a specific skill or a live problem, coaching or a targeted course is usually a better spend. Start with the CTO Readiness Assessment to find the gap.
