Engineering Leadership Benchmarks 2026: 14 sourced stats

The numbers engineering leaders and the writers covering them actually quote. Every figure links to the page it came from, with the publisher, the year and the date we last checked it. Where a figure comes from a survey rather than a measurement, the card says so.

AI in engineering: adoption vs impact

Surveys report near-universal adoption. Controlled trials disagree on whether speed improves. Check the design and sample size on each card before quoting any one of these.

-7.2%

Estimated delivery stability change associated with increased AI adoption

DORA 2024 also estimates -1.5% delivery throughput. More than 75% of respondents rely on AI for at least one daily task and 39% report little or no trust in AI-generated code. A 25% increase in AI adoption is associated with +7.5% documentation quality, +3.4% code quality and +3.1% code review speed. These are survey associations, not causal effects.

How we verify

We open the publisher's own page and read the number there. We record the sample size and design where the publisher gives them, and we say when a figure is an association from a survey rather than a measured effect. We do not average or pool figures from different studies. Full standard and corrections log: methodology. Spotted an error? Email hello@ctocoach.com.

What we couldn't verify

These claims circulate widely. We could not open a primary page that states them, so they are not on this page. We list them so you know to check before you quote them.

  • McKinsey: technical debt as a share of technology estate value

The McKinsey page returned a server error on every attempt, so we could not read the figure at the source.

  • McKinsey: generative AI developer productivity gains

Same page-availability problem. We will add it only after reading the primary page.

  • Harvard Business Review: CEO loneliness

We found it only on secondary blogs, and the HBR link we tried returned not found.

  • Gartner: share of infrastructure systems carrying technical debt

Seen only in a secondary article; no Gartner primary page located.

  • R&D spend medians from Aleph/Benchmarkit and Blossom Street

Seen only in search snippets. SaaS Capital (above) is the only R&D benchmark we opened.

  • Carta: CTO equity at Series A

Seen only on a secondary blog, not on carta.com.

  • Jellyfish 2026 engineering management report productivity figures

    Seen in a snippet only.

  • Pragmatic Engineer 2025 survey AI usage

Seen in a search snippet only; we have not opened the survey page.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these engineering leadership statistics come from?

Each figure comes from the original publisher: DORA, Stack Overflow, METR, GitHub, LeadDev, Gallup, SaaS Capital, Stripe, Kruze Consulting, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and Bessemer Venture Partners. We opened every linked page and read the number on it. Figures we could only find on secondary sites are listed as unverified and are not used.

Can I reuse these statistics?

Yes. Each card has an embed snippet with a link back to this page, and the table is available as a CSV. Please also credit the original publisher, because the figure is theirs, not ours.

Why do the AI productivity numbers disagree?

They measure different things. The Copilot result (55% faster) comes from a controlled experiment on one scoped task. The METR result (19% slower) comes from a randomised trial on real tasks in familiar codebases. The DORA and Stack Overflow figures are surveys of what people report. Compare design, sample size and year before quoting any single number.

How often is this page updated?

Every figure shows the date it was last checked. We re-check on each update and log substantive corrections on the methodology page.

Is the BLS median the salary of a CTO?

No. The BLS figure covers the whole occupation group of computer and information systems managers. For startup CTOs specifically, the Kruze payroll figures by funding stage are closer, but they cover only US venture-backed companies and only salary.
